Tonight is our First Annual General Meeting

“Gavenny Gardening Club” holds it’s first Annual General Meeting  at 7:00pm tonight.This is at The Community Hall,next to Ysgol y Fenni,off St David’s Road,The Mardy,Abergavenny,NP7 6HF. Known since 1956 as Llantilio Pertholey Village Produce Association the Members felt our ” Dig for Victory” beginnings needed updating.

Annual Subscriptions of £10 plus the Christmas Lunch and Party monies of £18 are payable tonight please.The Social Secretary needs any names who have not yet committed to the Party and Food Choices please tonight! If you could put these monies into an envelope,with your name on please.The Treasurer and Social Secretary will be collecting them as you come in to the Hall.

After the Interval we shall be having various Memories of past Members and some of the Characters who have been part of our History! There will also be a display of the years past containing some people who have been involved and memories that have been made!!




First Gavenny Gardening Club Show

Saturday 7th September saw the first Members Annual Show of the  “Gavenny Gardening Club”. From 1956 until now we have been known as Llantilio Pertholey Village Produce Association.We had some Major exhibitors absent for various reasons but other members made outstanding efforts to try and “fill the gap”! We had some very good entries in our many classes and some lovely Children’s entries.

The Harold and Margaret Cowles Salver for Cookery was Jointly won by Wendy Jones and Liz Barnes!

The Eddie Sandford Memorial Rosebowl for Photography was won by Jayde Jones.

Novice Cup was won by Liz Barnes.

Children’s Classes Trophies donated in memory of Margaret Turner.

0-5 won by Iestyn Barnes.

6-9 won by Ollie Jones.

10-15 won by Breanna Vaughan.

The Abergavenny Garden Centre Cup, Heaviest weight of potatoes grown from one tuber of the same variety, donated by the Garden Centre,Iestyn Barnes.

Children of all ages were eligible to enter this Class.

THE TRILEY CUP the most difficult to Win for getting the Most Points in the show was deservedly won by Sheila Clarke  who had a very successful day!


Very many thanks to our Judges,Stewards,Show Secretary Marion Tucker and Committee member Wendy Jones for sorting out the scoring and Winners. Our refreshment Ladies,also every other member who helped in any way,they all worked exceptionally hard in setting up and taking down the Show.They also gave the commitment to enter so many entries,which was very much appreciated,along with their families help,Thank You All!

It was lovely that two of our Life Members were present,the still very much involved President Marion Tucker and Geoff Slater. Also that past member Bob Breeze had travelled down from Herefordshire to support us.We also had Glenys Salter checking out the exhibits whose family have played a big part in the VPA’S EXISTENCE.Plus members of over 50 years were their,Thank You all for your support ,also to the ones I HAVE NOT NAMED.Since 1956 there has been a lot of people involved and we owe thanks to them all.

Gavenny Gardening Club

We enjoyed an excellent presentation last night by Amy Mackenzie-Mason “The Gourmet Gardener”.The talk entitled “Creating a Cutting Patch” was full of information and ideas.She brought along a beautiful selection of flowers to use throughout the Season.Members thoroughly enjoyed her enthusiasm and wished her husband and herself every success in the future.They are looking forward to an event at Llanover House in the third week in September.When they would be pleased to see visitors in the walled garden their.

Discussions and final arrangements were made for the Annual Members Show FREE ENTRY,open to the Public at 2:00pm,Saturday 7th September,to be held at The Community Hall,off St Davids Road,Abergavenny,Mon.NP7 6HF. Next to Ysgol y Fenni.

Also planning for the October Harvest Service,the Harvest Supper and the Christmas Lunch was discussed.The next ordinary meeting in the Hall promises to be an excellent evening,Jill and Alun Whitehead whose presentations we have thoroughly enjoyed in the past.Will be  giving a new presentation”Wales from the Valleys to the Mountains and the Gardens in Between”.This commences at the Community Hall on Monday September 16th at 7:00pm. Everyone welcome.The Meetings finish by approximately 9:00pm.
